One of the most
beautiful and peaceful houses in Bellapais, offering spacious accommodation
for up to five adults, with two private walled gardens, a citrus orchard and
spectacular views over the ruined Abbey to Kyrenia and the
coast.

Unspoilt Northern Cyprus has everything to offer for a memorable
holiday - whether you are looking for archaeological sites, mountaintop
crusader castles, deserted beaches, fine dining by the harbour side,
or simply relaxing in a hammock with a book.
The Carob Mill
The house is a beautifully restored mill, where donkeys used to trot round grinding the
carobs (once a major export of Cyprus). The original millstone is in the middle
of the pond. It is in the centre of the village, close to Lawrence Durrell's
house, where he began his "Alexandria Quartet" and which he described in
"Bitter Lemons".
No doubt written with a plate just like this at his side!
The impressive 'Mill Room', with its high beamed ceiling has air conditioning.
The well equipped kitchen has recently been refurbished with white granite work surfaces and cupboards of
local craftsmanship.
The Accommodation (3 bedrooms sleep 5)
There are three bedrooms, two double and one single, sleeping five people. The double bedrooms, both have their own bathrooms attached. Both bedrooms have air conditioning. The single bedroom is downstairs.
The balcony,
with its magnificent views of the Abbey and the coast, is usually in the sun
and is perfect for breakfast and sunbathing, or enjoying a drink at sunset.
The verandah is
usually in shade and is a lovely place to sit and read, listening to the
fountain and admiring the garden and coastal views.
The Gardens
It is possible to park your car within the gates of the property by driving up the hill (past "Bitter Lemons"). Alternatively the house may be approached on foot from the lower entrance, although this does involve a number of steps.
These steps lead up to the citrus orchard - a grove of orange, lemon, tangerine and grapefruit trees. This is turn leads up to the garden level - two walled, secluded gardens with a whole range of mature Mediterranean plants centred around the pond and fountain (home to lilies, reeds, fish and frogs). Rosemary, geranium, bougainvillea, jasmine, hibiscus, oleander, cyclamen and vines all flourish, shaded by the cypress, mulberry, peach, fig, jacaranda and mimosa.
The Area
Bellapais is the most beautiful village in Cyprus. Its situation overlooking the Kyrenian coast at the
foothills of the Beshparmak mountain range is unrivalled. It's ruined Abbey is
the epitome of Gothic romance. Under the "Tree of Idleness" in the village
square it is impossible to undertake work of any kind.
This lucky black cat is taking it easy too!
Beaches
There are lots of wonderful beaches along the coast, ranging from the well serviced with bars and
restaurants, to the practically deserted. Many are visited by turtles and it is
possible to book with the turtle research centre to see them laying eggs, or the
hatchlings struggling to the sea at night in the summer.
There are several swimming
pools within easy reach; for example the Courtyard Inn has a fantastic pool,
with excellent facilities, and is free of charge. You can also have a first
class meal there in the evening. (More information on beaches and pools will be
sent in our Information leaflet).
Wining and Dining
Bellapais has several restaurants; one of the most magical is the "Kybele" in the ruins of the Abbey
itself, perfect for a romantic evening.
Kyrenia also has plenty to choose from,
ranging from Turkish to European, Italian, Indian and Chinese. Sitting around
the harbour under the shadow of the castle, eating a fresh fish supper, is hard
to beat. There are many more on the coastal roads out of Kyrenia.
Excursions
Cyprus has a wealth of
fascinating places to visit. Where you go will depend on your interests - Bronze
Age, Roman, Byzantine, Crusader, Ottoman, wild flower walks or the beaches.
Suggestions are included in our Information Leaflet.
How To Get Here
Flights
From the UK we recommend Cyprus Turkish Airlines (Tel: 020 7930 4851) or Turkish Airlines (Tel:
020 776 69300). All flights involve touching down in Turkey en route; you will
not have to transfer luggage and usually stay on the same plane if flying with
C.T.A.
Holiday insurance,
It is a requirement of booking that you have adequate holiday insurance. For example, Columbus Direct (Tel: 020 7375 0011).

We can arrange a taxi transfer from the airport to the Carob
Mill. We advise this as otherwise the house can be difficult to find, especially
late at night. The cost, payable direct to the driver on arrival, is currently
£30 sterling per car.
Car hire
We can arrange car hire for you to be brought to the
house the morning after your arrival. You will need your driving licence,
and the cost is payable locally. Typical prices for a four-wheel drive jeep
during the high season is £25 per day. We will send you a "local Information"
leaflet to you when you book, which covers most things you need to know -but
if you require any further information, just let us know and we will be as helpful as possible.
Prices
Our prices reflect a discount for smaller parties.
The rental price range for this house is from £395 to £495 per week, depending on the number of people (to a maximum of 5).
